Six of Crows Reading Challenge
It's been almost eight years since the crows were first released into the wild, and they continue to be iconic. "Six of Crows" is one of my favorite books of all time, and our main Six Crows hold a special place in my heart as they do for many readers. I find myself being inspired by the story so much when it comes to my own writing, and I've been dying to do something Crow-inspired recently, so I decided to create a Crows-themed reading challenge.
Here's how to take on the challenge for yourself!
The first thing is to pick which Crow you want to play as. The beauty of this challenge is that each Crow has their own set of six prompts, so you can come back and play as a different Crow when you finish off one list. Each list of prompts is compiled from a combination of character traits and quotes.
Also, each Crow has a special power, if you will, something that can make the challenge even easier for you by allowing you to do something with one of the prompts. You don't have to finish the prompts in order or in a specific time frame, but you can if you want to make the challenge more difficult for yourself. Overall, don't forget to have fun doing this challenge.
Now with that all out of the way, let's get started.
This first prompt is one you have to complete regardless of which Crow you choose to play as, but it's pretty easy to start with:
Read a Book with Found Family in it
I know two books in a specific duology that could fulfill this prompt if you want to reread them. Just saying.
Alright, moving on to the first list of Crow-themed prompts.
We're starting with the infamous Bastard of the Barrel himself, Kaz Brekker. Here are his prompts:
Dirtyhands - Read a Book with a Black Cover
“Every Monstrous Thing” - Read a Book with a Morally Grey Protagonist
Rietveld - Read a Book with a Title that Starts with “R”
Jordie - Read a Book with a Sibling Relationship
Lockpick - Read a Book with a Mystery in it
“That’s the Laugh” - Read a Rom-Com
Okay, that last one might be random but don't worry this is where Kaz's special power comes in. If any prompt from this list doesn't suit your fancy, you can be a "Pickpocket" like Kaz and Steal a Prompt from another Character’s prompt list.
Next, we have Inej Ghafa, the Wraith and my favorite character in the Grishaverse by far. Think about it, she is the only female main character we have who isn't a Grisha, and she's just as powerful as they are. She's an icon, a legend, and she is the moment! Here are her prompts:
Suli - Read a book by a South Asian Author or featuring a South Asian protagonist
Santka Petyr - Read a Book with a Weapon on the Cover
Captain - Read a Book that partially takes place on a Ship
“I Like it when Men Beg” - Read a Book with a Badass Female Protagonist
Tightrope - Read a Book between 288 and 312 pages
“The Heart is an Arrow” - Read a Book with a Heart on the Cover
If you play as Inej, you can also be a "Wraith" and then you can take away one prompt from your list, and no one will be the wiser.
Next is one of the most Stylish men in the Barrel, Jesper Fahey. Even though he's a reformed gambler by the end of the Duology, he still loves a good game. Here are his prompts:
Gambler - Read a Five-Star Prediction
Sharpshooter - Read a Book by a Favorite Author
Zemeni - Read a Book by an African Author
“Not Just Girls” - Read a Book with a Bi Protagonist
“Comfortable in Chaos” - Read a Book with a Hot Mess Protagonist
Stylish - Read a Book with a Beautiful Cover
Now if any of these prompts give you any trouble, use your "Durast" ability. Pick a Book that even vaguely resembles one of the prompts and mold it to fit into your TBR. For example, you can read a book by an African-American author for the “Zemeni” prompt after using your ability.
Next, we have our other lovely Grisha of the six, Nina Zenik. She highly suggests getting some snacks to go along with your book if you're making a TBR based on her. Here are her prompts:
“You’re Better than Waffles” - Read a Book with Food on the Cover
Grisha - Read a Book with a Protagonist with Magical Powers
Heartrender - Read a Book that will tug at your heartstrings (AKA make you emotional)
“Call Me Death, if You Like” - Read a Book that deals with Death (for example, this can include war, necromancy, or the loss of a loved one)
Passionate - Read a Book with Red on the Cover
Jurda Parem - Read a Book in a Series You Love
Now if you're not feeling up to one of these prompts as you're on this challenge, you can be a "Charmer," like Nina, and do a Mood Read instead of a prompt. Why stress right?
Now we have our favorite man who looks like a cinnamon roll but could kill you, Wylan Van Eck, or Hendriks, based on how you feel about him keeping Jan's name. Either way, I think we can all agree that Marya is the superior parent of the two. Here are his prompts:
Artist - Read a Book with Pictures in it (this can be actual pictures or even chapter header illustrations)
Chemist - Read a Book with Science in it
Flute - Read a Book with a Musical Instrument on the Cover
Demolitions Expert - Read a Book with a Great First Line (it comes in with a bang)
“How Would I Run an Empire?” - Read a Book with a Reluctant Hero
“How about I Push You into a Canal…” - Read a Book with Water on the Cover
But if you're not loving these prompts and you happen to not be on a book-buying ban, you can travel back to Wylan's "Merchling" days and substitute a Prompt with your Most Recent Purchase.
Finally, last but not least, we have our favorite Druskelle, Matthias Helvar. Gotta admit, he wasn't my favorite at first, but he still holds a special place in my heart with the rest of the Crows. Here are his prompts:
Djel - Read a Book with a Tree on the Cover
Wolf - Read a Book with all the letters to spell “Wolf” in the Title
Fjerda - Read a Book with a Cold Setting
“You’re All Horrible” - Read a Book that is Out of Your Comfort Zone
“I Do Like You” - Read an Enemies to Lovers Story (Helnik Stans Rise Up!)
Hellgate - Read a book that has a Rescue or Escape in it
But if you start reading one of your books and you're not loving it, use "Chapter 40," as an excuse to count a DnF as a read. If you know, you know; if you don't, you're not ready for this challenge.
And there you go! The Six of Crows Reading Challenge. I had so much fun making this challenge, and I can't wait to see what you all do with it. If you make any posts related to the challenge, use the hashtag "sixofcrowsreadingchallenge," and tag me so I can share it!
