Author’s Log: NaNoWriMo 2023 Day 20

Day 20 of NaNoWriMo, and we're figuring things out.

I can't believe that we are ten days away from the end. I also can't believe how far from the end of this story I am. Usually, during NaNoWriMo, I've made significant progress with a story, and when it comes to my Fairy book, I'm back at square one. But it's not for lack of trying.

If I want writing to be my full-time job one day, I'm going to have to push through with story ideas I know. But I also want to make sure that I'm passionate about the story I'm writing because it will show in my writing if I don't.

I think one of the main things I'm figuring out about my story is that I wanted this to be a cozy romantasy, and that type of book requires much lower stakes than what I was setting up. So to achieve this with my book, I have to reevaluate the main characters' goals and the theme of the narrative.

If I want this to be a cozy romantasy, it needs to be more about two people falling in love while going about their daily life. Not them fighting to end a dictator like I originally thought. In one of my favorite Cozy Fantasies, Legends and Lattes, the main character, Viv, is setting up a coffee shop in a town that has never heard of coffee and leaving her old pillaging life behind. In the big scheme of things, that's not a daunting goal, so I need to think of something like that for my plot.

It will take some time to figure out this new direction, but I'm excited about it.
